Training & requirements

These are our most frequently asked questions Training & requirements

What requirements do I need for make-up artist training?

You must be at least 18 years old and have creativity and an interest in special effects and artistic make-up. Younger participants require the written consent of their parents or legal guardians. No previous school knowledge, A-levels or make-up experience required. The course is suitable for creative beginners and advanced students. More important than previous knowledge are a passion for SFX, a willingness to experiment and a willingness to work with different materials.

Is the training also suitable for career changers?

Yes, absolutely! Many successful make-up artists come from other professions and have turned their passion for SFX and creative make-up into a career. The flexible training with online modules and face-to-face courses makes it possible to learn on the job. Life experience and different perspectives often enrich the creative work. The training systematically teaches all techniques from the ground up.

What are SFX techniques and what do I need them for?

SFX (Special Effects) includes make-up techniques for wounds, scars, blood, prostheses and 3D effects used in horror, action and fantasy productions. You will learn how to work with professional materials such as latex, wax and silicone to create realistic injuries, ageing effects and creatures. These techniques are particularly in demand in the film, TV and theater industries.

What is the difference between stage make-up and classic make-up?

Stage make-up is specially designed for theater, musicals and drag shows and takes into account strong stage lighting and long-distance effects. It works with more intense colors, stronger contouring and over-lining techniques for dramatic effect and character portrayal. In contrast to classic beauty make-up, the focus is on artistic expressiveness and visibility from a distance.

What is the difference between a make-up artist and a make-up artist?

The qualified make-up artist focuses on classic beauty techniques, skin analysis, color consultation, day, evening and bridal make-up as well as professional set make-up. The make-up artist also covers special effects, fantasy make-up, character portrayals and creative stage looks. The combined training combines both areas for maximum versatility and career opportunities.
