Exotic foods such as goji berries, chia seeds and acai berries are on everyone's lips and are touted as true miracle cures. They promise more health, energy and beauty.
Some even go one step further and even attribute to these, mostly tropical, foods the ability to alleviate health complaints.
We are of course talking about superfoods, often referred to as ultrafoods. Although there is no official definition of the term or guidelines as to what constitutes a superfood or what it must be able to do, the demand for these foods is higher than ever before.
But what is behind these little miracle foods? Why are there so few "native superfoods" and who actually decides what is a superfood?
