Questions about

Career prospects & specialization

These are our most frequently asked questions Career prospects & specialization

What is the income of a make-up artist?

Income varies greatly depending on the area of work and type of employment. Employed positions in beauty studios, department stores or with cosmetics brands offer a regular salary with social insurance. Self-employed make-up artists have significantly higher earning potential as they can set their own fees. Specializations such as wedding and event make-up, film and TV productions and fashion shoots are particularly lucrative. Earnings increase significantly with professional experience, portfolio quality and reputation. Large cities such as Vienna offer higher fees than rural regions.

What factors influence earnings?

Earnings depend on several factors: Professional experience and portfolio quality increase the fees significantly. Higher rates are possible in Vienna and large cities than in rural regions. Specializations such as bridal make-up, SFX or editorial increase income. Self-employment offers the highest earning potential, but requires active marketing and customer acquisition.

Can I specialize further after my training?

Yes, after your make-up artist training you can specialize in various areas: Special Effects (SFX) and Fantasy Make-up, Airbrush Techniques, Permanent Make-up, Hairstyling or Make-up Photography. The FlexyFit Academy also offers the combined training Dipl. Visagist & Make-up Artist, which combines both diplomas.

What is the difference between a make-up artist and a make-up artist?

The qualified make-up artist focuses on classic beauty techniques, skin analysis, color consultation, day, evening and bridal make-up as well as professional set make-up. The make-up artist also covers special effects, fantasy make-up, character portrayals and creative stage looks. The combined training combines both areas for maximum versatility and career opportunities.

How do I build up a customer base?

You will build up a successful customer base through a professional portfolio with high-quality photos of your work, an active social media presence (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok), collaborations with photographers, bridal fashion stores and event agencies, referral marketing and customer reviews as well as networking at beauty events and wedding fairs. You can already make your first contacts during your training.
